Lady Gaga was wearing the 128-carat fancy yellow diamond also known as “the Tiffany Diamond”. It is set in a necklace with 16 cushion-cut diamonds and 46 round brilliant diamonds. This iconic diamond was last seen on the neck of Audrey Hepburn in 1962 for the Breakfast at Tiffany’s promotional photos. You may notice it looks a little different – it’s the same yellow diamond but the chain has been adapted to make it feel more modern. This was the first time the diamond has ever made an appearance on the red carpet and Reed Krakoff, Tiffany & Co. Chief Artistic Officer said:
“Lady Gaga is the ultimate creator, innovator, and rule-breaker, and I’m thrilled that she will be wearing the legendary Tiffany Diamond on the awards show red carpet for the first time since it was discovered 141 years ago.”
The golden yellow stone was originally discovered in the Kimberly mine of South Africa in 1877 and the rough weighed 287 carats. It was acquired by Charles Lewis Tiffany a year later and he entrusted his famed gemologist George Frederic Kunz, after whom the beautiful pink stone Kunzite is named.
Kunz cut the stone into a 128-carat cushion-cut, to bring out its brilliance he put 82 facets instead of 58 in a typical cut.

The most expensive jewel ever worn on the red carpet was worn by singer Carrie Underwood when she wore this incredible 381-carat diamond necklace by Jonathan Arndt at the 2013 Grammys. Featuring oval, pear, marquis, and round cut white diamonds, this necklace cost $31 million.
2008 Oscars Nicole Kidman:
Nicole Kidman’s multi-strand diamond necklace has become widely accepted as one most memorable pieces of jewellery ever worn at the Oscars, but it was also one of the most expensive. Made especially for the actress by the late L’Wren Scott in 2008, it featured more than 7,500 diamonds and took 6,200 hours to intricately handcraft. It is valued at $7 million.
Jennifer Lawrence Oscars 2013:
Jennifer Lawrence wore a dress from Christian Dior Haute Couture – the most expensive to ever be seen on the red carpet for the Academy Awards.
Lawrence was the face of the brand at the time in 2013 and her gown – designed by Raf Simons – was worth US$4 million. She paired it with shoes from Brian Atwood and Chopard jewellery – including 12 carat pear-shaped white diamond drop earrings and an eight carat diamond ring. The 74 carat necklace, containing 150 diamonds, was worn backwards by Lawrence so it dripped between her shoulder blades.
